Trip to Sacramento to see family and fireworks đź’Ą
Key Deer on Big Pine Key, Florida. These full grown Key deer are about the size of a large dog. Hurricane Irma hit the Florida Keys pretty hard last week, the only place you can find these little deer. I used to live on Big Pine Key and work with Fish & Wildlife down there. Let's hope both the people and animals can recover soon from this devastating storm. . . . . . #irma #hurricaneirma #bigpinekey #keydeer #keydeerrefuge #fourdeer #endangeredspecies #usfishandwildlife #floridakeys @hashtagflorida @usfws @floridayskeywest @floridakeysoutfitters @deer_north_coffee_co
[Timelapse 🎧] Orchard Sunset. In the middle of the valley this is a scene I've watched play out dozens of times on my way home from work. This time I was ready with my camera. View From The Big Trees. Being only six feet tall, I have to search for a rocky cliff to get this expansive view of the valley. However, the giant Sequoias behind me stand over 200 ft tall - and 20+ ft in diameter. I guess those giants can enjoy the view from inside the forest itself. . . . . . #weexploretheworld #sequoianationalpark #captionstory #tellyourstory #storyteller #giantsequoia #visalia #nationalgeographic #natgeotravel #yourshotphotographer #canon_photos #dailybestpic #nationalparklife #liveauthentic #photopills #photopilleroftheday #impressivephotography #ig_shotz #master_shotz #superhubs #exclusive_shots #hubs_united #igworldglobal #schooloftravel @schooloftravel #wildernessculture @ig_humanplus #ig_humanplus #iamtb @travelbloggerES #folkgrammer #thenationalparkspass #abc7eyewitness @sequoiashuttle
Kicking Up Dust. Horse-packing is still possible in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. It feels as though you've gone back in time when you're riding a horse with a mule train trailing, summiting tall mountains on treacherously narrow paths. And all of this in the same state that houses Hollywood and Silicon Valley. . . Sunset in the Foothills. . The view of California's Great Central Valley from the towering mountains of Sequoia never fails to move me. No matter how soon I may want to get home and showered there's always time to stop and enjoy the view. . . Finding Inspiration in Skokie, IL

Skokie is a little town in the suburbs, just northeast of Chicago. There is nothing particularly exceptional about it, except that it’s prime location to park a motorhome and take the metro into the city. This I deemed necessary, in order to avoid the insanity of driving my Toyota Dolphin motorhome into a city like Chicago. Don’t forget that it broke down on me last week, and just imagine trying to find somewhere to park! Besides, the public transit is cheap, fast, and easy to figure out.

But Skokie wasn’t chosen randomly out of a hat. Strangely enough, I actually know a Chicago Lyric opera singer that lives there. In fact, we grew up in the same neighborhood. Allow me to fill you in….

My friend Nate Peretto, who was with me for the first three weeks of the trip, has a brother, Daniel, that was an outstanding singer in high school. This led to a full ride scholarship at Pepperdine to continue his singing. Subsequently, he made a move to Chicago, where he eventually landed a coveted spot with the Chicago Lyric.

Growing up together, Daniel was a lot older than us, and most of my memories involved getting beaten up in two-on-one wrestling matches where Nate and I stood no chance. However, the age gap between Daniel and I meant that we’d never really hung out and didn’t exactly know each other that well. Initially, the plan with Nate was to drive here together, visit, and he would then fly home. But that was scrapped when the motorhome’s clutch gave out. Nate had flown here already, and was now back in California.

So I arrived on my own, interested to see the life that Daniel has made for himself in Chicago. Having come all the way from California, he’s really putting down roots now. He has a wife, Nina, two young boys and a nice house here in Skokie. And what struck me right away about Daniel was his passion. This was unexpected! Not that I thought the visit would be dull or boring, it’s just that I didn’t know I would come away from the Peretto house inspired!

Asking him about his future in opera I discovered that he had a tryout for the New York Met next month – one of the most sought after jobs in the opera world! He was doing everything in his power to make it happen. I was amazed that after singing all day and having a drink with me, he was on his computer watching more opera and showing me how he follows along with the songbook. It’s not often that you see that kind of dedication.

That is what was inspiring to me. That’s the kind of job I want to find. Something I want to do even in my spare time, and if it doesn’t pay that well, I still want to do it. Daniel has had to be creative to make ends meet sometimes, but his passion for what he does pulls him and his family through. He has found his voice, and I don’t just mean in singing. He’s found meaning in his life by discovering his true mission. That’s what I mean by voice. It’s that perfect overlap of your talent and your passion, it’s doing something with meaning, that someone will pay you to do. I know that to live this way I may have to sacrifice the things I want right now for what I want in the long run. But ultimately is that a sacrifice? Maybe the real sacrifice is when you give up trying to find your voice, and compromise for the sake of creature comforts and convenience.

As for me, I’m still looking for my voice, but that’s why I’m putting myself out there. I’m trying different ideas on for size, and broadening my perspective as much as I can. When I discover my unique voice it will be all the more satisfying having had to search for it high and low.

Goodbye California…

It worked!  We set a date for October 3rd and wrote out everything we had to have done.  Even though it didn’t seem like we could finish remodeling the motorhome in time, we made it.  To me, it was a clear example of creating a vision first, then making it a reality.  I’m slowly learning that having a plan doesn’t strangle your spontaneity, it actually gives you more freedom.  We made the plan and now we have the freedom to travel!  If we hadn’t, I’m sure we’d still be working on it in Visalia.

Back to the trip!  Nate and I made the short trip to Folsom, CA on the 3rd and met up with Hunter and Taylor, two friends I made working for Northstar in Lake Tahoe last winter.  It was great to catch up with them over some surprisingly good beers and hear what their plans are.  Both of them will be heading back to Tahoe for the winter season.  It sounds like a good time, but this season I’ve decided I’ll only be up there for a visit or two.  As the night progressed me and Hunter, of course, stumbled upon a karaoke bar.  We couldn’t believe our luck when they had the one song we were looking for.  A folk parody rap duet we sang many times in Tahoe called “The Rhymenocerous vs. The Hiphopopotomus.”  Check out the original version here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbbxA8a_M_s

Needless to say, we brought the house down with bottomless lyrics.

After that we wanted to cover some real distance so we drove that night to Weed, CA.  The night was beautiful, with clear skies perfect for seeing stars.  I had to pull over and get some good long exposure shots of Mt. Shasta and the I-5.

After all that, we made it to Weed, CA.   Once we parked, the tiredness of the past two weeks of work and travel hit me hard.  You know, like when you walk into a pole that you didn’t see coming.  It hit me fast.  It felt like everything I did was done inside a vat of molasses.

That night I slept good.  The sleep was restorative and we started the new day, ready to leave California behind and truly begin the adventure!  So we’ll say our goodbyes to California from Weed, and see you in Oregon!

A Man and A Motorhome

My guess is that most of you who read this blog will know me well.  That said, if you somehow stumbled across this post and have never met me, I’m Zach.  And I’m the proud owner of an old Dolphin.  Before you ask, this is not a case of animal cruelty and no, there is not a friendly but under-exercised sea creature in my backyard pool.  I’m talking about a different kind of dolphin.  A Toyota Dolphin.

I’m one of the few people who, at the age of 24, thought that buying an RV older than himself sounded like a really good idea.  At the wise old age of 26, I still think it’s a good idea.  We’ll see how I feel about it after the trip :).  Some of my friends have bought houses, some are married… I have a Dolphin.  Don’t get me wrong, I too want to reach those worthy milestones someday, but I figure I’ll start on that when I get back home.  Now is the time for travel and adventure!

Let me catch you up to speed (never to exceed 55mph!) on this roadtrip:

I’ve remodeled a 1984 Toyota Dolphin, focused mostly on interior work, with some preventative work and maintenance done on the engine.  For the first half of the trip Nate P. will be joining me; he plans to fly home from Chicago.  The first place we’re heading is Sacramento, and the plan is to leave by tomorrow.  From there we’ll continue North to Oregon and Washington.  Then we head East.  As we travel I will take pictures, videos, and keep writing here.  Follow along if you want!

I had a lot of help from my Dad so I want to thank him for that.  I also want to thank Nate for all his hard work on the motorhome.  Lastly, I want to thank Jon A. for helping under the hood with both my vehicles.

We still have a lot to do, like change the drive belts and the oil, pack our stuff, etc… so I’d better get some sleep!

Here are some pictures of the Dolphin before the remodel:

I put the new carpet and wood floor in last year…
